Falco & his Austrian Legacy
Falco & his legacy in Austria.
Johann Hans Hölzel better known by his stage name Falco, was an Austrian singer/songwriter and musician, famous worldwide in the 1990s.
Born in Vienna in 1957, Falco always knew that he wanted to be a Pop Star and showed great talent from a young age. He stated in an interview that as a toddler he was able to keep in time with the drumbeat of songs from the radio and at four years old he was gifted a child's grand piano where he would play songs from his idols The Beatles, Elvis and Cliff Ritchard.
Falco is now considered to be the best-selling Austrian singer of all times after selling 20 million albums and 40 million singles. He gained international fame with hits such as "Der Kommissar", "Vienna Calling" and "Rock Me Amadeus" which reached number 1 on the Billboard charts in 1986, making Falco the only artist whose main language was German to score a vocal number-one hit internationally.
On Febuary the 6th 1998, at the age of 40, Falco died of severe injuries in a bus crash. At the time of his death he was planning a comeback after the release of his most recent song"Out of the Dark (into the Light). Although Falco died, his legacy certainly has not. In Febuary 2008, the film "Falco: Damn It, We're Still Alive" was released in Austria. As well as this the 1999 for "Sugar Town" was also dedicated to his memory. A restaurant in Vienna's suburbs has also kept a table reserved for Falco and a statue of him (see 1st picture) stands proud in Gars am Kamp in Lower Austria. Falco is berried at Vienna Central Cemetery (see 2nd below) and is open to visitors to go and pay tributes to Austrias most successful singer/songwriter.
After studying Falco and his life, I decided to download a playlist and listen to some of his songs. One of my personal favourites was "Nie Mehr Schule" from his album Einzelhaft, released in 1982.
