                Salzburg Christmas markets.

Christmas Markets in Salzburg ➣ When & Where to Find Them
IMAGINE THIS: The pandemic is over. You are walking around the Christmas markets in a big jacket with a warm Glühwein in your hand. There is a strong smell of cinnamon and marzipan in the air and the bright colourful lights, lining the wooden stalls catch your eye. You can hear church bells ringing and carols singers singing "Oh Tannenbaum". The markets are bustling with busy shoppers, excited children and tourists, making the most of the Austrian Christmas traditions and doing some last minute shopping. Does it get any better than that?

Christmas in Austria is definitely at the top of my bucket list, especially after a lonely, cold Christmas in lockdown last year. What can be better than spending the festivities in a winter wonderland full of cosy Christmas traditions and good food. One tradition that has always caught my eye has been the Austrian Christmas markets, especially in Salzburg.

Salzburg Christmas markets...How did it all begin?
One of Austria's most famous markets is the Salzburg Christmas markets. Located at the at the foot of the Hohensalzburg fortress and around the beautiful Cathedral of Salzburg, these traditions are traced as far back as the 15th century. Back then, the markets were known as the "Tandlmarkt" and were set up to give  locals a chance to purchase a wide range of goods and festive food throughout Advent.

Traditions and Events:
The markets typically run from mid November until the 26th of December. The Hohensalzburg fortress has room for about 100 stalls offering a wide variety of goods, confectionary, food and drinks. As well as providing a great place to try out some Austrian Christmas sweets, the markets also offer a variety of events for everyone, including weekly sing-a-long choir performances, traditional Austrian wind music and Christmas story readings for children.

Food and Drinks:
The beautiful markets also provide and amazing opportunity to embrace Austrian food and drink culture.  Make sure you explore the stalls and try one of Austrias most famous Christmas biscuit- Vanillekipferl (vanilla and almond biscuit). However, make sure you like almonds first, as you will rarely find an Austrian Christmas biscuit without them. As well as this, you must also make sure you tuck into some Rumkugeln, however make sure you aren't driving first, as they are known to be very strong and alcoholic.

And to cleanse your thirst? Although Glühwein (mulled wine) needs no introduction, some other typical drinks sold at the markets also include Punsch. Punsch is a drink made of fruit juice, spices and alcohol like wine or liquor. You will be blown away by all the different Punsch they offer at the Salzburg markets.

So if you're looking for a cosy Christmas away from home this year, make sure you choose Austria as its Christmas markets will not disappoint. 😊
